Most people are back to normal daily life about two weeks after rhinoplasty, but the nose keeps changing for months. Knowing the timeline helps you plan your trip, your work and your expectations.
Open or closed rhinoplasty?
In open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes a small incision on the skin between the nostrils, which gives a clear view of the cartilage; it is often used for bigger changes to the tip. In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are inside the nose, so there is no visible scar. Neither is better for everyone: the surgeon chooses the technique that fits what needs to change. If a deviated septum blocks breathing, it can be corrected in the same operation.
The timeline
| When | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Night 1 | The nose feels blocked and you breathe through your mouth. Sleep with your head raised on two pillows. |
| Days 2 to 4 | Swelling and bruising around the eyes peak and then start to fade. Cold compresses around the eyes help. |
| Day 7 | The splint is removed at your check-up. The nose looks swollen and the tip feels stiff; this is normal. |
| Weeks 2 to 3 | Most bruising is gone and many people go back to office work and social life. |
| Weeks 4 to 6 | Light sport is usually allowed again; contact sports and heavy lifting wait longer. |
| 3 months | The nose looks natural to others, but fine swelling remains, especially at the tip. |
| About 12 months | The final shape is visible as the last swelling settles. |
Practical tips for the first weeks
- Do not blow your nose hard; clean it gently as your surgeon shows you.
- Sneeze with your mouth open to avoid pressure on the nose.
- Glasses should not rest on the nose for several weeks; ask your surgeon how to wear them.
- Avoid the sun, saunas and hot baths while the nose is swollen.
- Choose tops that button at the front, so you do not pull clothes over your nose.
Planning your stay in Istanbul
Plan about 7 days in Istanbul, so the splint can be removed before you fly home. Rhinoplasty at Esthebeyond costs from €2,850, all-inclusive. If you only want to soften a small bump without surgery, a non-surgical nose job with filler can be an option, but it cannot make the nose smaller.
When should you contact your surgeon?
- Bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure.
- Fever, increasing pain or redness after the first days.
- A sudden change in the shape of the nose after a knock.
- Your coordinator stays in contact after you fly home, so you can send photos and questions at any time.
