Who is it for?
For women with thinning in a defined area and a good donor area. With diffuse thinning over the whole scalp, a transplant is often not the right solution, and medical treatment is considered first.
How is it done?
Grafts are taken one by one under local anaesthesia, usually from a hidden zone at the back of the head, and placed with DHI or FUE between the existing hair.
Alternatives and how to choose
Many women with thinning hair do not need a transplant. When hair loss is diffuse over the whole scalp, or linked to hormones, iron, thyroid or stress, medical treatment is the first step. A transplant helps when thinning is in a defined area, such as a wide parting, a high hairline or the temples, and the donor area is good. Women often prefer an unshaven technique so that long hair hides the procedure.
Good to know before you decide
- Bring recent blood test results if you have them; they help the doctor assess the cause of hair loss.
- A hairline lowering by surgery is a different procedure; ask if a high forehead is your main concern.
- Avoid hair dye, tight ponytails and heat styling until your doctor allows it.
- Hormonal changes, for example after pregnancy, can cause temporary shedding; this is assessed before planning.
- Results develop over 12 to 18 months, like in men.
