Loose skin after weight loss: which surgery helps?

Losing a lot of weight is a big achievement. Loose skin is often what is left, and exercise cannot tighten it.

After major weight loss, whether through diet, weight loss injections or bariatric surgery, the skin often cannot shrink back. Surgery removes the excess skin and tightens the area. The right time is when your weight has been stable for some months, and the right plan depends on which areas bother you most.

Why exercise does not fix loose skin

Skin that has been stretched for years loses elasticity. Training builds muscle under the skin, but it does not remove the extra skin itself. Creams and devices can improve the surface a little, but when the skin hangs in folds, only surgery removes it.

When is the right time?

  • Your weight has been stable for about 6 months or more, so the result is not changed by further loss.
  • After bariatric surgery, many surgeons advise waiting until 12 to 18 months after the operation.
  • If you use weight loss injections, tell your surgeon. The plan depends on whether you will continue them and whether your weight is still changing.
  • You are in good general health and do not smoke, because smoking slows wound healing.

One operation or several?

Some areas can be combined, such as the belly and the breasts. Very long combined operations increase risk, so after large weight loss the work is often split into two stages a few months apart. Your surgeon decides this after seeing your photos and your health history.

What about the scars?

Removing skin always leaves a scar. Surgeons place the scars where clothing or underwear hides them as much as possible. Scars are red at first and fade over 12 to 18 months. Most patients find a scar easier to live with than folds of loose skin.
