Dental implants in Turkey: why two trips, and how long each one takes

Dental implants are rarely finished in one holiday. Here is how the two trips work, so you can plan time off and flights.

Dental implants in Turkey usually need two trips. On the first, the implants are placed and you leave with temporary teeth. After 3 to 6 months, when the implants have fused with the bone, you return to have the final crowns or bridge fitted. Bone grafting can add time; in some cases fixed temporary teeth can be fitted soon after surgery, but this depends on your bone.

Trip 1: placing the implants

  • A 3D scan and examination show how much bone you have.
  • Teeth that cannot be saved are removed, and the implants are placed under local anaesthesia.
  • You leave with temporary teeth, so you are not without teeth between the trips.
  • Mild swelling for a few days is normal. Eat soft food at first.

Between the trips: 3 to 6 months of healing

The implant needs time to fuse with the jawbone. This process is called osseointegration, and it is why the final teeth cannot be fitted straight away. During this time you keep your mouth clean, avoid chewing hard food on the implants and send photos to the clinic if something feels wrong.

Trip 2: the final teeth

  • The dentist checks that the implants are stable.
  • Measurements or scans are taken for the final crowns or bridge.
  • Colour and shape are tried in before the final fitting.
  • The final teeth are fixed and the bite is adjusted.

How long to stay

Plan 3-5 days + 5-7 days (two trips). The exact number of days depends on how many implants you need and whether other work, such as zirconia crowns, is done at the same time.

When it takes longer, or faster

  • If there is not enough bone, a bone graft or sinus lift may be needed first, and healing takes longer.
  • Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes increase the risk that an implant does not fuse.
  • With good bone, some patients can have fixed temporary teeth soon after surgery. Your dentist decides this after the scan.

Implants, crowns or veneers?

An implant replaces a missing tooth. If your own teeth are still there, crowns or veneers may be the better option. Read veneers, crowns or implants for the difference.
