Short answer: for your operation, who operates on you and where – the surgeon and the hospital – matters far more than the city. Istanbul offers the most choice and the most flights; Antalya and Izmir can be fine with the right clinic. But the idea of combining surgery with a beach holiday does not work.
The three cities at a glance
| Istanbul | Antalya | Izmir | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Size | 15.8 million inhabitants | 2.8 million | 4.5 million |
| Airports | Two international airports (IST, SAW) | One (AYT) | One (ADB) |
| Flights from Europe | Many direct flights every day, all year | Many direct flights, busiest in the summer season | Fewer direct routes |
| Choice of surgeons and hospitals | Largest | Good | Good, but smaller |
| Combine with… | A city trip once you feel better | Beach – but not right after surgery | Coast and city |
Why "surgery and a beach holiday" is a myth
Antalya is attractive because of the sea – but after body or breast surgery you cannot use it. Surgeons usually advise no swimming in the sea or a pool for about 4–8 weeks after a tummy tuck and at least a month after breast surgery, until every wound is fully closed. Fresh scars must be protected from the sun for about a year, or they can darken permanently. And a compression garment in 35 °C heat is no fun. If you choose the coast, choose it for the clinic – not for the beach.
Tip: autumn, winter and spring are the most comfortable seasons for surgery in Turkey – cooler for wearing your garment, and easier to keep scars out of the sun.
Why Istanbul?
- Flights: two large airports with direct connections from almost every European city, all year round – useful if you need to change your return date.
- Choice: the largest number of plastic surgeons and fully equipped hospitals in the country.
- A city that works in any season: once your surgeon allows it, a short walk along the Bosphorus is a nicer recovery than a beach you cannot use.
What matters more than the city
- A named, certified plastic surgeon you speak to before surgery.
- A licensed, fully equipped hospital with complication insurance.
- Enough days before you fly home – about 7 for a tummy tuck.
Prices depend on the clinic, not on the city. Read our checklist in Is plastic surgery in Turkey safe? before you decide.
